An Indian woman working at Meta’s AI division in Seattle has gone viral after sharing her layoff experience on social media. The research scientist, who joined Meta in February 2025, was laid off just nine months later as part of the company’s latest round of job cuts.
In her post on X (formerly Twitter), she shared that she holds an H-1B visa, which requires visa sponsorship from any new employer, and expressed her interest in exploring new roles in AI and language model training. She also mentioned having a two-month internal transition window to find another position within Meta, though she hopes to stay in the Seattle area.
Her story quickly gained attention, with several founders and executives from AI startups reaching out to offer potential job opportunities.
Meta recently announced 600 layoffs across its AI division, impacting teams in AI infrastructure, the Fundamental Artificial Intelligence Research Unit (FAIR), and product development. Alexandr Wang, Chief AI Officer, stated in a memo that the decision aimed to streamline operations and allow employees to take on more impactful roles.

Affected employees were notified that their official termination date is November 21, and they are currently in a non-working notice period. Meta is offering 16 weeks of severance pay, plus two additional weeks for each year of service.
Despite the setback, the woman’s experience highlights how the tech community often rallies to support skilled professionals during turbulent times.
