Women's University to Collaborate With U.S. Varsity

Coimbatore: A women's university will collaborate with an American varsity to involve 10 corporation primary schools here in a project for inclusion of children with disabilities for a three-year period.

Avanashilingam University for Women, winner of Obama-Singh 21st Century Knowledge Initiative award, will collaborate with University of Minnesota, USA, to bring the schools here under a 'Sustainable Response to Intervention' project.

The Rs 1.5 crore project is titled 'Sustainable Response to Intervention model for successful inclusion of children with disabilities - An India-US partnership'.

Speaking at the stakeholders meeting here, University Vice Chancellor Sheela Ramachandran said the rationale behind the project was that about 16 million children of the total of an estimated 140 million worldwide who are out of school are children with disabilities.

The primary goal was to develop a sustainable infrastructure with educational system in India to allow implementation of the Model, enhancing opportunities of inclusion of children at risk and with disabilities in the general education classrooms, she said.

The project would include a series of exchange visits and activities that would lead to the achievement of the project objectives within the stipulated time, Sheela said.

Besides, the vice-chancellor, City Mayor S M Velusamy and project coordinators participated in the meet.
