4. University Of Madras

Established in 1857, the University of Madras (informally known as Madras University) is a public state varsity situated in the capital city of Tamil Nadu, Chennai. It is one of the three oldest universities in India and was incorporated on 5th September 1857 by an act of the Legislative Council of India.

The institution is a collegiate varsity with six campuses spread around the city of Chepauk, Marina, Guindy, Taramani, Maduravoyal and Chetpet, and is home to more than 50 departments.

Five star status is conferred to this university by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council, and the University Grants Commission has honored the institute by granting the status of the University with Potential for Excellence.

The University of Madras is also home to one of the landmarks of the city of Chennai, the Senate House, which is a 19th century marvel designed by Robert Fellowes Chisholm.
