2. University of Roorkee (IIT Roorkee)
This is an institution with a rich history. Established in 1847 in British India by the then lieutenant governor, Sir James Thomason, University of Roorkee, is a public university located in the Indian state of Uttarakhand.
Though the institution has its foundations in a class started in the year 1845 with a view to develop and nurture local talent in engineering, it was in year 1847 that the institution formally came into existence.
The institution was renamed as the Thomason College of Civil Engineering in honor of its founder after its inception in the year 1854. The institution was transformed into an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in 2001, and thus became the seventh IIT to be formed in the country. The first Indian to graduate from this college was Rai Bahadur Kanhaiya Lal and he graduated in the year 1852.
