BANGALORE: In a bid to stream courses electronically, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is bent upon launching the Swayam Bharat programme. In order to support the Swayam Bharat programme some institutes like Indian Institutes of Technology and Indian Institutes of Management are attempting to run online courses, particularly through Massive Open Online Courses .

The absorption in MOOCs among premier institutions is being attributed to the new government who heightened the importance of online education."It is a clear mandate from the government as in the last Budget, 100 crore was allocated to online education for MOOCs and virtual classrooms," affirmed Rohin Kapoor, senior manager (Education practice) at Deloitte. “MOOCs might also help achieve the target of training 500 million people by 2022,” he adds. IIM-C director Saibal Chattopadhyay said, "MOOCs and online delivery is clearly the future", reports Times of India. 

IIM Calcutta (IIM-C) is probably the next to follow, with the institute’s proposal being put forward to the HRD ministry. Meanwhile, IIT Kanpur is establishing its own Online Courses for MOOCs called MOOKIT; where they’re trying to expand MOOCs. IIM Bangalore is planning to launch courses on the edX platform in 2015. IIM Indore and IIT Gandhinagar have been administrating broadband distance learning programmes and are now targeting MOOC platform. IIT Kharagpur is establishing automatic programmes to evaluate assignments in MOOC programmes. This year NPTEL, has worked closely with IIT Madras, and has launched its first course on programming algorithms and data structures and will be introducing eight new courses including humanities in January. IIT Guwahati (IIT-G) has proposed two courses for the Swayam Bharat Platform (managed by IIT-B) and is also teaming with IIT-M for NPTEL MOOCs.
