Over Half the Interviewees Err During a Job Interview: Report

BENGALURU: Candidates go through so much counseling and grilling before they face a job interview that any mistake from them is unacceptable. They are expected to be having nerves of steel and wings of courage that would shatter any obstacle present in front of them. Of course, some of them will bungle under-pressure but most of them emerge with flying colors, right? Wrong!!!!!!!!!Reports suggest that over half of the candidates fumble during their job interviews! (Credits: ET)

As reported by PTI, a study was conducted recently by JobBuzz.in to identify the percentage of candidates who actually fumble during job interviews, and the result was quite amusing! Out of 515 employers across various industries who came for that study, over half the candidates came unprepared and fumbled! So, what were the questions of which candidates were not sure about? About 20 percent employers said that the candidates fumbled the most when they were asked to give an explanation about how they are the best fit for the job with the company. Another 18 percent employers noticed that the candidates were not sure about the skill-set they posses and messed up when asked about it.

The study also noted the percentage of candidates in different fields who made a mistake during their interview. 77 percent of IT, telecom, ITeS and dotcom employers admitted that the percentage of candidates erring was well over 5o percent while 65 percent of automobile sector employers noted the same in their respective sector. The percentage of fumbling candidates came slightly down in the Banking, Financial Services and Insurance (BFSI) sector, where employers said that 40-50 per cent candidates interviewed monthly tend to fumble. Erring candidates were lowest in the manufacturing and retail sector, as 72 percent employers pointed out that only 20-40 per cent interviewees mess up during their interview process.

Although it is imperative that during a job interview, both the interviewee and the interviewer must stay focused. Recruiter must also take necessary measures to make the candidates comfortable, as it is in best interest of both. Sometimes, a good candidate may get nervous and stumble, and the recruiter can lose out on a good resource. But stumbling on basic questions and not coming prepared for the interview is unacceptable! According to the research, a staggering 72 per cent of the employers believe that the candidates do not research about the organization they are appearing for, and as a result they have no clue what-so-ever that in which way they are fit to work there!

The employers also said that the candidates also tend to make some common mistakes such as not appearing interested for the job or not showcasing the passion or zeal that can woo any employer. Around 43 percent of the employers also believe that the candidates don’t dress appropriately for the interview which makes them look unprofessional and make employers believe that they are not engaging.

Different candidates do different things for getting a job, dressing properly, speaking confidently, or believing in themselves. But some candidates take the wrong way to get a job. They over-exaggerate and lie about their achievements which according to the report is a big mistake. “Only lies have details” a quote that gains practicality in these kinds of situations. When employers start to go in the details of the candidate’s over-exaggerated feats, truth pops out. About 36 percent of the employers said that candidates do exaggerate during the interviews.

The study exposes some surprising realities concerning the recruitment field. Even though, public speaking and facing interview panel has been a part of an individual’s study curriculum in most professional institutes, the problem of facing an interviewer for real still flourishes. Another reason of stumbling in an interview is language problem and improper exposure. Candidates face it very difficult to speak professional language suddenly. But measures must be taken by the students to overcome this problem. One way can be by participating in group discussion and other cultural activities to get over fear psychosis. This will also help in improving their language and make them mentally strong. Candidates must remember that believing in themselves can make them crack any job interview!
