Mumbai: New job generation declined by about 2 percent to 1,25,500 jobs across the country in the April- June quarter this fiscal with Mumbai seeing a significant fall of 28 percent in new employment opportunities, said a study by industry body Assocham.

"Delhi-NCR region on the other hand remained numero uno in new job generation with maximum share of over 27 percent in total jobs generated in the quarter compared to other cities," the study on 'Job Trends Across Cities & Sectors' said.

New job generation in Mumbai declined by 28 percent in the April-June quarter this year to over 13,100, while Chennai saw a decline of over 21 percent to just over 8,000 new jobs in the quarter, the study said.

However, Delhi NCR and Kolkata witnessed growth of 16 percent and 19 percent in new job generation in the quarter.

A total of over 6,500 new jobs were generated in Kolkata during the quarter year as against about 5,500 jobs in the Q1 of the last financial year, it said.

"Even Mumbai's share in total number of new jobs generated across India has plummeted from over 14 percent a year ago to just over 10 percent," the study said.

IT, ITeS and hardware together garnered maximum sector-wise share of over 39 percent in the total new jobs generated across the country, Assocham national secretary general D S Rawat said.

He said that the BFSI sector accounted for the second highest share of about 14 percent followed by academics at 11 percent.

Bangalore saw a surge of about 7 percent in new job generation among other Tier 1 cities while Pune has also seen a decline of over 17 percent in the new job generation.

The IT and ITeS and hardware sector alone accounts for over half of the share in total number of about 8,500 jobs generated in the city in the Q1 of FY 2013-14.

"Overall, these numbers portray a dull job market owing to on-going global economic slowdown," Rawat said.

Even as the hiring trend activity has put up a dismal show during the first quarter of the current financial year, the industry is hopeful that job market will pick up second quarter onwards, he added.

Among the tier II cities, Lucknow registered a huge growth of over 58 percent in number of new jobs generated during the Q1 of FY 2013-14 compared to the same period of last year.

Even Kanpur saw a huge surge in new job generation growth to the tune of over 53 percent followed by Kochi, which saw over 45 percent growth, Nagpur (27 percent), Gandhinagar (17 percent) and Jaipur (16 percent).

In tier III category, Bhubaneswar has seen maximum surge of over 37 percent in the new job generation followed by Raipur (32 percent), Meerut (21 percent) and Ranchi (10 percent).

The Assocham team tracked the data on a daily basis for vacancies posted by over 3,000 companies on various job portals, advertisements in job supplements of national and regional dailies and news journals for 56 cities and 32 sectors offering employment opportunities across India.
