Leadership Crisis In IIMs Across The Nation

While this is the preview from the IIM side, let’s see what the corporate have as reason to this.

"Very few people of high quality have come through. When new institutions are set up, the only way they will get good talent is if the existing institutions produce top class people," says K Ramkumar, ED, ICICI Bank.

"I opted for directorship basically for the challenge of constructing an institute of the stature of an IIM," says Prafulla Agnihotri, director, IIM-Trichy, who took charge in February, 2011. "Salary is an issue. Remote location of some of these institutes makes it difficult to find administrative staff and attracting young talent and faculty," he adds.

Along with Economictimes, we put forward the common factors that are attributing to the lack in IIMs:

Lack of Freedom
Many consider the reason for vacancy in the position of director as lack of freedom in the job profile. All new IIMs have financial crisis involved in them. Government budgets and allowances also make the work of IIM directors work hectic.

"Some of the new IIMs are still not financially self-sufficient. They need to go to the government for budgets and clearances. There is more government interference as a result," said the dean of an IIM.

“Newer IIMs are grappling with several problems such as land, remote location, no campus of their own etc.
Talent from the older IIMs, who are really familiar with the IIM system, is reluctant to go to the newer ones," says Anindya Sen, dean academics, IIM-Calcutta.

Experienced professionals don’t want to head an institution where they don’t have work independence. Why professors? Any ideal professional follows the same belief.
