Indian Undergraduate Colleges Witness Exceptional Placement Year
BANGALORE: Undergraduate colleges in India are perhaps witnessing the peak season of placements where job market appears better than past years. The placement season for the first quarter of the year just got over with lucrative packages worth up to 29 lakhs were offered to students from Delhi University and other institutes, reports ET.
Premiere and leading colleges in Delhi like Lady Shri Ram College for Women (LSR), Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) and others also saw a substantial surge in the salary packages being offered by recruiters. With plenty of placements at Loyola College, Chennai, the institute referred the year as best in terms of placements while Bangalore’s Christ University is also witnessing the same rush.
At Shri Ram College of Commerce started placements in August and by the end of the first round 200 students were successfully placed at McKinsey, Deutsche Bank, EY, Grand Thornton, AT Kearney and others. Goldman Sachs and Parthenon-EY is also expected to arrive here for recruitment.
Lady Shri Ram College for Women is also experiencing the placement rush where 65 out of the 200 students signed up for jobs and got successfully placed. Apart from multinationals, startups like Oyo Rooms, Car-Dekho, Vmock and BlueGape are also amongst the recruiters at these placements.
"We have no specific proclivity and are looking to hire from all graduate backgrounds," said Umang Kumar, president, CarDekho, and CEO, Gaadi.com. "Even humanities works for us as we are looking to hire smart young people for analyst roles."
"The placements this year have been phenomenal and definitely a major leap from our performance last year," said Kanika K Ahuja, convener of the placement cell at LSR.
"By the end of just the first placement season, we have managed to beat our own record of the highest package from last year ( 18 lakh) to this season's highest placement of 29 lakh (also highest in the University of Delhi). This is surely one of the best years we have had," she added.
The year has also been equally great for Loyola College, Chennai in terms of placements where students mostly from the statistics, economics and life sciences got placed.
Bangalore being the hotspot of successful startups in India, the city’s colleges is expecting more startups to come forward to hire candidates. This year has also marked a surge in the recruitment from financial service companies.
At SRCC in Delhi, startups are offering packages of 4-5 lakh. "Startups come with a promise of making employees partners within a few years. That growth opportunity isn't there with some of the big-wigs in the business and that's why students lean towards them," said Nitin Gupta, student placement coordinator at SRCC.
“The talent from undergraduate colleges is energetic and passionate and would be able to understand our international clientele's needs,” said Vivek Agarwal, principal partner at Square Yards, a real estate advisory.
Startups like Vmock are looking for analysts and content developers whereas Bluegape is recruiting content leads and marketing managers.
