Indian Parents Not Ready to Fund their Children's Career

BANGALORE: Despite the progress in economy and culture, India’s roots hold firmly onto the grounds of certain general accepted rules. In India as a student if you don’t aspire to become either a doctor or an engineer, it’s a shame! Even the modern parents share the national wisdom that states an engineer or a doctor or a MBA is the most stable and highest paying profession, reports TOI.

However, breaking the shackles of long old rules prevailing in the nation, students have started paying attention to other subjects of their interest and are making their way to unconventional choices in career. Simultaneously, parents are not prepared to meet the expenses of the uncertain career choices their ward are going to make. A survey of families by Axis Mutual Fund states that parents are uncertain on what their children would opt for in their career and hence they are not ready with the expense to meet the same.

Young students being unsure, have 2-3 career options in their minds which are generally unconventional. On the other hand, parents want their children to take up the conventional path which doesn’t include any risks regardless of their interests. "Today's children have a great number of options while parents don't think on those lines," said Chandresh Nigam, MD & CEO, Axis MF.

The study was carried out in two halves. The first one carried out an experiment on parents and their children. The experiment was about children drawing their career dreams whereas parents painting what they aspire their children to become. The experiment was carried out without interaction and the experiment concluded with results where the thoughts of parents’ and children hardly matched with each other.
