IIT-JEE 2014: A Record 88 Pct Students Make The Cut In Their First Attempt

BANGALORE: We all know that road to IITs is fiercely competitive with a very little acceptance ratio. But we also know that having skills like time management, speed and concept application will help you make it to the winning line and that is what has happened in 2014 IIT-JEE exams with 88 percent candidates sailing through in their first attempt, reports Hemali Chhapia of TNN.

According to the sources, the entrance exam to the Indian Institutes of Technology has never had so many candidates who made the cut in their first attempt. These numbers are a jump by about 18 percent compared to the previous year.

And slicing the statistics further shows that of the 9,795 students currently sitting in the first-year classrooms across IITs, the count of those who cracked the JEE in the first attempt stands at 6,725, which is a healthy 68.65 percent.

IIT director said, "We are realizing that by restricting the number of attempts, the IITs are getting students who are very well-trained. I am not sure if it is putting more pressure on students, but students are a lot better prepared."

When it comes to qualification, 76 percent were form urban centers, 14.22 percent from towns, and 9.77 percent from villages. These figures also marked a sharp divide on campus with large chunk of students in the current batch coming from the upper-middle class and lower-income groups.

Like the previous year, most students from the current batch came from families where parents were in government service, followed by those from a business background. Yet, most candidates who qualified for the exam declared that they did not attend a coaching class to crack the high profiled test. Additionally, in one of the information collected by the tech college revealed that close to half of those who made it to the entrance test prepared for the exam on their own.
