By law, every country in the European Union has at least four work weeks of paid vacation and Italy is entitled to follow this too. The Italian job goers get up to 20 vacation days, each year, in addition to its 10 national paid holidays. And employees also receive extra pay even when these holidays are not on workdays, which is an added plus. All these benefits were passed by former Prime Minister Mario Monti to improve the Italian job market by removing the tradition of overprotecting older workers and focusing on giving more opportunities to the youth.

However, with all these necessary efforts Monti was voted out of power in the most recent election. Due to this in 2012, the unemployment rate in Italy went up to 10.7 percent, which is one of the highest among the countries analyzed by CEPR.
