Cos Lure Employees With Innovative Hacks to Beat the Traffic

Companies like Coca-Cola and Sapient have offered relaxation on working hours to beat the traffic at peak hours. "We start 30 minutes early at 8:30 am and close by 5:15 pm in order to beat the peak traffic hours," said Sameer Wadhawan, Coca-Cola. Even firms like Samsung, Bacardi, Ericsson, Amway and American Express have allowed flexible working hours.

“We have had to resort to means such as three work timing slots in a day, encouraging working from home and car pooling to drive around this issue. We encourage members to use the metro, too." said Managing Director of Bacardi, Vijay Subramaniam.

"In the last one year or so, the percentage of Indian employers offering flexi timing to their employees has risen from about 40% to 60 per cent," said Kangan S Venkataramani, benefits India leader.

Not just the companies but government is also taking initiatives to beat the traffic. The Gurgaon government is about to introduce Car-Free Tuesdays where cars will not be allowed on Tuesdays to the busiest of office areas like Cyber City, Golf Course Road and Cyber Park. However, additional bus services would avail.

"We are asking all our employees to make maximum use of the increased public transport facility on car-free Tuesdays. The reduction in the number of cars will also help reduce pollution," said Sanjay Rishi, president of AmEx South Asia, which has offices on Golf Course Road and Cyber City.

Infosys launched a campaign in Pune named-"Ab Bus Karo," to encourage employees to avail company pick-ups and drops while in Bengaluru, employees are being encouraged to cycle to office.

Microsoft, Hyderabad has the same policy of pick-up and drops for employees.
