Malvika an Unschooled Mumbai Girl Rejected by IIT but Makes into MIT
BENGALURU: It was a proud moment for the family of the seventeen-year old Mumbai-based girl who recently got selected for Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT); but not so for her as her only childhood dream of getting admission into an IIT institute was scraped. The reason being she was unschooled. However, she studied all the subjects at home which to her misfortune dint fetch her a metric or higher secondary certificate. The three times International Olympiad of Informatics medal winner broke all stereotypes of conviction through her self-belief and determination. She rejuvenated her computer programming skills and has now got a scholarship at America’s top university. Now, she will pursue a Bachelor of Science degree from MIT.
Reaching to MIT was not a cake walk for the girl in a country like us where mark in exam designates the brilliance of a child. Thanks to her brave mother Supriya, who took a bold decision to pull her back from school and introduce her to home schooling during a time when she was a brilliant student considering her academic performances. Supriya Joshi insisted on keeping her daughter happy for which she choose not to provide conventional knowledge just for the sake of society. Before that she worked in an NGO and left that job just to prepare curriculum for Malvika and provide her every basic amenity at her home.
According to the IIT admission eligibility criteria, she is not eligible for the institute because of the non showcase of 10th and 12th certificate. IIT has not any provision to provide admission to brilliant students in certain fields by bypassing the selection criteria. However, MIT accepts medal winners from various Olympiads and provides them a scholarship for courses in the university. And because of her sheer dedication and brilliance, Malvika got this opportunity of life, but it gave a wake-up call for the Indian education system. In India, she only got admission in Chennai Mathematical Institute (CMI) as an MSc scholar.
Brilliant minds of the country go to top universities of the world because their intelligence is ignored over the marking system in the country. Srinivasa Ramanujan is the most famous example in this case, as he failed in all subjects except Mathematics and was ignored in the country. He later got famous as the man who knows infinity because of his mathematics brilliance. There are multiple examples and Malvika is one more addition to that list. May be later in life, she becomes a computer genius and it will be again a setback to the Indian system. The Indian education system needs to be revamped before we lose some more brilliant minds like Joshi.
