Gender Gap Shoots Up, Karnataka with Least Rural Women Labor

BENGALURU: The country’s labor force is increasingly witnessing a shortage in participation of women from rural areas. This situation pertains at Karnataka, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh where women took part in labour over the years. The southern state, of Tamil Nadu has witnessed a gender gap of 8 percent. The portion in case of Madhya Pradesh is 15, while Gujarat stands at 16, reports TOI.

The more the portion of gender gap, the lesser the participation of women in labour force.

A study conducted by Niti Aayog shows that poor performance in the agriculture sector is reducing opportunities for rural women. Due to non participation of female employees, the present gender gap in the country is 25 percent points between 2005 and 2011.
"Women who lost jobs in agriculture did not find place in other sectors of the economy. One of the reasons is the poor education of rural women that acts as a barrier to a smooth inter-sectoral labour mobility. Nearly 69 percent of rural women are either illiterate or have been educated only up to the primary level." says a study conducted by Sunita Sanghi, A Srija and Shirke Shrinivas Vijay of Niti Aayog.

The study also says, "Agriculture, which is the primary work area of women in these states, has seen a decline. However, many women workers who have been displaced from agriculture did not find jobs in non-farm sectors. The jobs created were mostly in the construction and utilities sector where women have only a small share in employment."
