Confused About How to Ask for Promotion? Here are 5 Brilliant Ways

BENGALURU: Asking for a promotion in a progressive organization is life’s most anxiety-inducing activities and somewhat stressing—especially in today's uncertain economy. Interactions and assessments are an ongoing process inside a company, and anyone can reach the point of career trajectory to initiate a conversation on promotion.

Find some tips below from experts on how to sail around promotional offers for you:

1. Discuss: The key here is to prepare before time. Identify a specific position for yourself and then know how you would demonstrate or justify the role position. "There should not be a gap between how you think you have done versus how others view your performance. Getting 360-degree feedback to validate your own impressions will give you confidence and data points," says Kaushik Ghosh, people head at ThoughtWorks Technologies India.

2. Listen: Do not hurry while putting your points, analyze the aura. "Savvy employees should listen intently. Even during the conversation, have an inquiring approach to knowing how the business affects your performance and what more you can do," says R Mahalakshmi, director of HR at Mondelez India.

3. Timelines: You could be the right candidate for a position but, what if the company is cutting down the costs or not planning to branch out the hierarchy. In such cases, it's advised to discuss some timelines by when you can expect to hear back or get closure on conversations initiated around a possible promotion, says Ghosh.

4. Focus on outcome: Promotion is action based, not the duration. "Career growth discussions should be regular. Move away from transactional dialogues and focus more on the role and outcome-based conversations," says Shelly Singh, co-founder of PeopleStrong.

5. Compensation: You probably started your convo with the value you bring to the work and hard work you put to get a job done, why to end it on asking for compensation? "Employees often club them together and this diminishes the value one can get out of these conversations," says Singh.
