9 of the Top 10 Indian Universities Plummet In the World University Rankings
Bangalore: Indian universities are slowly losing their sheen on the world stage and this is reflected on the latest edition of the “Quacquarelli Symonds university rankings: Asia”. Though the other Asian varsities have made significant inroads in the rankings and increased their presence by about 17 percent among the top 200, 9 out of the top 10 Indian universities have seen a slump since the previous year, as reported by Himanshi Dhawan of TNN.
India’s premier university, IIT Delhi has dropped two places and is slotted at 38th position; IIT Bombay, down by 5, is slotted at 39th position; IIT Madras has dropped from 45th rank in 2012 to 49th this year; IIT Kanpur, down by 4, is at 51; IIT Kharagpur is at 58 from 56; and IIT Rourkee is down by 1 and is slotted at 66th position.
"The reasons for the declining performance of Indian institutions are a decrease in academic reputation, alongside longstanding issues such as high student/faculty ratios and lack of international engagement," said Ben Sowter, head of research, QS, as reported by the Economic Times.
"While several of the IITs now produce a lot of research, low citation rates suggest it is having a limited impact in global academia," he added.
India has 11 entries among the top 300 of the world university rankings, while Japan has 71 entries, China is represented by 68 universities, and Korea is represented by 53 varsities.
