88 Pct IIT-B Students Claim Professors Are Incompetent
Bangalore: Approximately 88 percent students of the Indian Institute of Technology- Bombay claim that the reason behind their poor performance is the inefficiency of their professors to generate interest in the course, reported Yogita Rao of TNN.
Dejected with the lack luster performance, a group of IITians from the current batch carried out a survey on the campus.
The first part of the survey centered on the reasons behind the poor performance and the lack of student’s intent to study was published in the January issue. It was revealed that 75 percent of the IITians in the current batch were not willing to spend time on their academics in the absence of deadlines for submission of assignments and more than 75 percent of them were more interested in pursuing hobbies, while many were addicted to social networking and micro-blogging sites.
The second part of the survey centered on the issues relating to teaching and learning process in the institution, published in the April issue, included reactions from professors and few observations.
As per the study, there is scope for improvement among the staff in the institution and it stressed on the need for a centre for effective teaching. 72 percent of the students believe that the course content is not attention-grabbing due to its theoretical nature and also lacks in application. Many respondents recommended a return to black board teaching as they think that showing slides is not adding value to teaching.
