6 Easily Avoidable Career Mistakes

Assume good work will be noticed

If you’re a hardworking employee who always goes an extra mile, you’ll definitely be rewarded, right? Not really.

Corrie Shanahan, proprietor of the Beara Group, says that just expecting to be noticed won’t get you anywhere, and you have to make your contributions known. "This is particularly common with women but affects men, too," she says.

"Many smart and talented people have watched less talented colleagues progress, because they are better at letting superiors know about their accomplishments." she says

Being unaware of the market rate

Research shows that women are less likely than men to ask for a raise. This also affects people who have weak negotiation skills. "Ask for a 10- to 15-percent raise when you make a job change," she adds.
