The award comes after Tata Steel's recognition in 2023 for steel industry safety standards improvements.
Tata Steel has been chosen for the very first time for the prestigious World Steel Association's (worldsteel) Safety and Health Excellence Recognition 2024 for its innovative online purging assistance model purging of explosion risks in the gas cleaning plant area of the blast furnace. The company is the only one from India out of six global steel producers listed under this category for this year.
The assessment program for 2024 recognized practical improvement in safety and health within four primary areas that were focused: safety culture, leadership, occupational safety management, occupational health management, and process safety management.
Rajiv Mangal is Vice President for Safety, Health & Sustainability at Tata Steel. He emphasized the commitment that the company is supposed to employ its workers as the safest employees around the globe, recognizing investments in up-to-date technology and digital tools with a changing workforce as the underpin. The purging assistant model enables the proper placing of remote-operated valves and gas analysers along the gas line and full monitoring and control of the process from a control room. Because of this innovation, the purging time was reduced by 50 per cent. This also meant zero high-potential risk incidents and huge cost savings. Tata Steel had won the Worldsteel Safety and Health Excellence Recognition 2023 in the category of improving safety standards in the steel industry.
