In a major boost to India’s semiconductor manufacturing ambitions, Suchi Semicon announced plans to establish a $100 million semiconductor assembly and testing (OSAT) plant in Gujarat. The facility is expected to be operational by November this year, spanning an initial area of 30,000 square feet. With a production capacity of up to 3 million chips per day, the Surat-based plant is projected to generate around 1,200 jobs, supporting India’s growing presence in the global semiconductor market.

The new facility will focus on advanced semiconductor assembly and testing, aligning with the government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative. This development comes as India seeks to bolster its position in the global semiconductor supply chain, reducing reliance on imports and enhancing domestic manufacturing capabilities.

Suchi Semicon has partnered with Gujarat Technological University and Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology (SVNIT) to develop a skilled workforce tailored for the semiconductor industry. “Our goal is to address the growing global demand for semiconductors while also reducing supply chain inefficiencies. By creating up to 1,200 local jobs and leveraging cutting-edge technology, we aim to offer competitive pricing and high-quality services on the global stage”, said Ashok Mehta, Founder of Suchi Semicon.

The company’s approach focuses on minimizing supply chain lead times and logistical costs, which will be particularly beneficial for companies conducting design operations in India. The plant will cater to critical sectors, including consumer electronics, automobiles, telecommunications, and wearables.

Shetal Mehta, Co-Founder of Suchi Semicon, emphasized the dual focus on scaling production and empowering the local community through job creation and skill development. “With this investment, we’re not just scaling up production but also empowering the local community through job creation and skill development”, she stated.

This announcement aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of establishing India as a global hub for semiconductor manufacturing. During his Independence Day address, the Prime Minister highlighted the importance of semiconductors, modern technologies, and artificial intelligence in shaping the country’s future. The first indigenously developed chip is set to be launched by the end of this year, marking a significant milestone for India’s semiconductor mission.
