  • Meta employees are using its internal AI chatbot, Metamate, to draft performance reviews.
  • The tool summarizes achievements and feedback but struggles with context.
  • The move follows recent layoffs in Meta’s AI division.

Just weeks after Meta laid off around 600 employees from its AI division, the company’s remaining staff are now turning to its in-house chatbot, Metamate, to help write their performance reviews. The internal tool, which functions like ChatGPT, scans through documents to summarize an employee’s achievements and feedback, a step that highlights Meta’s growing reliance on AI across operations.

According to a report, several Meta employees are using Metamate to simplify the year-end review process. Joseph Spisak, Product Director at Meta’s Superintelligence Labs, said the tool efficiently compiles his performance summaries. “When I want to summarize my performance, I call Metamate and it searches all my docs and accomplishments, it’s great”, he said at the TechEquity AI Summit in California.

Spisak added humorously that some might try to 'reward hack' the system, referring to the potential for employees to game AI-generated evaluations.

However, not everyone at Meta is fully confident in the tool. One employee, speaking anonymously, said Metamate often struggles to understand detailed project contexts. Many reportedly use it only for generating coworker feedback templates rather than full reviews.

The move underscores Meta’s broader push to integrate AI into daily workflows, from internal reviews to app development and data analysis, as the company continues to champion AI as the future of productivity.
