India's information technology (IT) industry is reporting robust growth with hiring activity expanding by 16 per cent year-on-year (YoY) in April 2025, a new report stated on Friday. One of the key factors driving this growth is the sharp growth of Global Capability Centres (GCCs), which have added more than 110,000 new tech jobs in the financial year 2024-25, according to data tabulated by employment platform foundit (formerly Monster APAC and ME).
This recruitment boom follows an 11 per cent month-on-month decline in April, which the report says is due to seasonal fluctuations. Overall, the picture remains upbeat with steady demand across experience levels and heightened emphasis on specialist, future-proof skills. The industry is at the beginning of a new phase of 'strategic growth', says V Suresh, CEO of foundit. He underlined the fact that India is shifting from quantity recruitment to skill-based, innovation-driven employment.
This change is a reflection of India's wider vision to enable its youth for leadership in science and innovation globally," he stated, suggesting that tier-2 towns are emerging as significant players in the digital economy. GCCs are at the forefront of this transformation, particularly in fields such as data engineering, DevOps, and enterprise architecture."
The step indicates a wider shift in India's IT recruitment from large-scale hiring to quality recruitment in terms of demanded skills, the report added. It pointed towards an increasing trend for jobs related to artificial intelligence, cloud computing, cyber security, and data analytics. These streams combined now constitute 95 per cent of jobs advertised in the IT industry. Additionally, employers are more concerned about practical knowledge than about degrees, as 62 per cent of businesses now value skills over qualifications.
Salaries-wise, specialist jobs are providing hefty packages. AI entry-level jobs begin at Rs7.2 lakh annually, while seasoned professionals in AI make up to Rs 76.4 lakh. Cyber security is one of the best-paid fields, with premium salaries hitting Rs 87 lakh.
