Kutch Copper, a subsidiary of Adani Enterprises Limited (AEL), made a significant debut in the metal industry with the commissioning of its maiden unit for a greenfield copper refinery project in Mundra, Gujarat. The project's inauguration marked a pivotal moment for the Adani Portfolio, signaling its entry into the metals sector while contributing to India's journey towards self-reliance and sustainability.

The commencement of operations at Kutch Copper's refinery project is poised to create substantial employment opportunities, with projections indicating 2,000 direct and 5,000 indirect jobs. Adani Enterprises is investing approximately $1.2 billion in establishing a copper smelter with an initial capacity of 0.5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) in the first phase.

Gautam Adani, Founder and Chairman of the Adani Group, emphasized the company's commitment to advancing India's position in the global copper sector through ambitious projects like Kutch Copper. Adani underscored the project's significance in driving sustainable development and fostering technological advancement in the country.

Upon completion of the second phase, which mirrors the initial capacity, Kutch Copper is poised to become the world's largest single-location custom smelter, setting new benchmarks in Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) performance. The company aims to achieve this feat by leveraging cutting-edge technology and digitalization while adhering to stringent ESG standards.

Gautam Adani reiterated the pivotal role of the domestic copper industry in India's journey towards carbon neutrality by 2070, highlighting the synergy between green infrastructure development and environmental stewardship. He emphasized Kutch Copper's commitment to adopting innovative green technology to minimize its carbon footprint and contribute to sustainable growth.

The demand for copper is expected to surge, driven by renewable energy initiatives, electric vehicles, charging infrastructure, and the expansion of power transmission and distribution networks. Kutch Copper's technology is engineered to have the lowest carbon footprint, aligning with global sustainability goals.

In line with its commitment to environmental conservation, Kutch Copper has designated one-third of its plant area as green belt space and allocated 15 percent of its capital towards environmental protection measures. The company has implemented a zero-liquid discharge model and utilizes desalinated water for operations, further minimizing its ecological impact. Additionally, Kutch Copper emphasizes wastewater recycling within its processes to reduce waste and promote resource efficiency.

The commissioning of Kutch Copper's refinery project heralds a new era of sustainable growth and technological innovation in India's metal industry, reaffirming the Adani Group's commitment to driving economic progress while prioritizing environmental stewardship.
