HR: Neither Foe, Nor Friend

Bangalore: Is HR the saviour of employees or a mortal foe? Certain employees see the HR as a formidable entity who oversees their payroll, could fire them and have a firm rein of their freedom. Is this a fact or does the employee see himself as a victim? It could be extremely puerile to take an ‘either-or’ look at this question.

A good number of people just don’t like their HR personnel. The employee engagement activities are seen as superficial and an attempt to establish a fake connection. They also see HR as people who cater specifically to the needs of the organization; after all, the management signs their paycheck as well. So what purpose does the HR serve if it is not able to gain the trust of the employees? CareerBliss writes on businessinsider.com that there needs to be clear understanding of the role that HR plays in an organization.

Firstly, the HR always works for the company and not for the individuals. This may be a tough pill to swallow, but the HR function tries to align the objectives of the organization with those of the individuals and tries to ensure that the employees’ interests are safeguarded. What is to be noted is that the HR is not a counselor and hence not obliged to keep a worker’s opinions confidential. It may deem it necessary to take certain actions which may safeguard the interests of the company and the other employees based on information an employee discloses. The HR will usually try its level best to be accommodative of the needs of the employees but this is not always mandatory. The HR will always heed the complaints of an employee if he/ she claims discrimination based on age/ gender. It also takes cases regarding sexual harassment very seriously. However an employee needs to remember that complaints regarding work culture may fall on deaf ears.
