Bangalore: The use of metric in business to bring out the better performance from an employee can raise the eyes brows of many people. The biggest question will be in what way is it actually used or is useful. In metric, it is very important to understand how measurement should be done to obtain an expected performance which will be effective for problem solving, resource allocating and decision. Certain things which employee should clear are that they are the only one to make them accountable and managers have every right to track and guide them if their performance is below the mark.
The best way to implement this method is by using the indicators which are Leading and Lagging. If manager makes out the difference between the performances (Leading) and the expected (Lagging) outcomes then the employees can join the indicators to understand about their own stand.
Storytelling is said to be the best technique to make employee understand the strategic level importance of their performance by joining the indicators. Some best books which every manager should have to master the art of storytelling are, " The Leader's Guide to Storytelling: Mastering the Art and Discipline of Business Narrative" and "The Secret Language of Leadership: How Leaders Inspire Action Through Narrative", written by Steve Denning, who served World Bank for several decades.
There should be a link and alignment between individual and collective metrics to keep up a sound measurement practices and to give a Real time feedback in any growing organization. The three strata of metrics i.e Organizational-level (i.e., "boulders"), Team- or work area-level (i.e., "rocks") and Individual-level (i.e., "pebbles") should be connected to set goals and to implement the best managerial practice for the betterment of both the employees and the firm.
The dots of performance when coupled with storytelling and feedback will make employees clear about what's working on and this will remove the fear and give the organization an untapped potential of their employees which they can nurture for a mutual growth.
