Blending HR and Sustainability

Bangalore: There has been increasing emphasis on the need for organizations, big and small to take charge and become part of the sustainable movement. They are expected to help their employees realize the need to move towards a future that has a tri-directional focus;Profits, Planet and People, states John Boudreau on CFO.com.

While much is discussed about how CSR could help in engaging employees, what is not understood is that sustainability could even help an organizational boost its overall performance.

The link between sustainability and HR may not be obvious at the first glance, Boudreau elucidates by using the example of how HR programs such as talent development in organizations such as IBM are used to support the principle of sustainability. He also states the example of the CHRO at Gap who was pivotal in making note of supplier working conditions and initiated global environment inititiatives.

Boudreau states that sustainability can both strengthen HR and push the company to succeed overall. There is a need to recognize that even employees wish to be a part of an organization that tries to push for organizational excellence.

If an organization should indeed focus on the TripleP benefits, it will have to excel when it comes to finance and operations. However, it does not end there. There needs to be greater attention paid to the oft ignored factors that affect an organization like politics, psychology and the values. These are the factors that have been used to gauge employment terms and determine how strongly an employee connects with his workplace.

Any HR leader who has the vision to go beyond his expected job responsibilities and takes the initiative to align his organization towards making the planet more green, empowering people who are associated with the organization and ensuring that they retain the profit margin of their organization, would undoubtedly be a visionary on par with the rest of the C-suite.
