The Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) added 19.37 lakh new workers in June, according to provisional payroll data released by the Ministry of Labour and Employment on Friday. In the same month, 34,762 new establishments were brought under the ambit of the ESI scheme, extending social security coverage to a wider workforce.

Of the new enrolments, 9.58 lakh workers (49.5%) were aged 25 or below, reflecting the continued entry of youth into India’s organised workforce. The gender-wise analysis revealed that 4.13 lakh women employees joined in June, while 87 transgender employees also registered, underlining ESIC’s inclusive approach to social welfare.

The ESI scheme, one of India’s key social security initiatives, provides financial and medical support to employees and their families in cases of sickness, maternity, disability, and work-related injuries. It applies to factories and certain categories of establishments such as shops, hotels, and educational institutions employing a defined number of workers.

The increase in ESI enrolments comes alongside a record surge in the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO), which added 21.89 lakh members in June the highest ever since payroll data tracking began in April 2018.

Year-on-year analysis indicates that June 2025 witnessed a 13.46% rise in net payroll additions compared to June 2024, reflecting growing employment opportunities and stronger awareness of employee benefits.

A significant portion of new entrants in both ESIC and EPFO continues to be in the 18–25 age group, largely first-time job seekers. The EPFO added 6.39 lakh new subscribers in this category in June, constituting over 60% of total new members. The trend highlights India’s expanding formal job market, with youth dominating fresh workforce participation.
