BANGALORE: Women take up to 48pct of India’s population and yet take up only a diminutive minority of less than 2pct of  workforce employment in Inc's offices and factories like Adani Ports, Grasim, Bajaj Auto,  Hero MotoCorp and UltraTech. Bajaj Auto recruits 67 women of their 9,000-plus employees while Adani Ports has a minute workforce of only 12 women in comparison to the 1,257 staff listed on its payroll. Hero MotoCorp takes up just about 88 women with the workforce of 7,000-plus employees.
In FY15, women consist of 18pct of the employees for Nifty companies. As per a study by ET Intelligence Group, apart from IT companies and banks, the percentage falls to 7pct for the remainder work setting. As part of business responsibility, 46 Nifty companies have produced these numbers for the last fiscal.

Bino Paul, professor and dean, School of Management and Labour Studies, Tata Institute of Social Sciences said "Gender diversity in India does not get the place it deserves". In the subject of balancing gender diversity India Inc like Bajaj Auto, Mahindra & Mahindra and Adani Ports did not reply to queries.

"Firstly, on the supply side, the gender ratio in different sectors is skewed in India. For instance, household chores are predominantly performed by women. Secondly, on the demand side, Indian companies and proprietary firms have historically been masculine in nature and value system with diversity not being much appreciated," adds Paul.

Usha Ananthasubramanian, managing director and CEO of Punjab National Bank and former chairperson of Bharatiya Mahila Bank said "It is not that companies are not giving opportunities to women, it is the woman and her family who more often than not determine the scope of her career”.

Academics suggest that India Inc is in need of a cultural revolution in this platform. Ananthasubramanian cited that companies need to take the initiative to support women employment. They need to to build a more women friendly setting.
