Women Outperform Men in Levels of Emotional Intelligence
BENGALURU: Women surpass men in 11 of 12 key emotional intelligence competencies, says a new research by Hay Group division of Korn Ferry. It was found that women scored higher than men did, on nearly all emotional intelligence competencies, but for emotional self-control, where gender had no say on things, according to the Economic Times.
This research reflects a sample of 55,000 professionals across 90 countries and various levels of management and the data that was pooled during the 2011-2015 timeframe. With the help of the Emotional and Social Competency Inventory (ESCI), developed and co-owned by Richard E. Boyatzis, Daniel Goleman and Hay Group, the research has deduced that women were more effective with their emotional and social competencies when correlated with effective leadership and management than men.
In an assessment of competency levels of both men and women across the 12 key areas of emotional and social intelligence, the research concluded that a biggest possible difference between men and women was observed in emotional self-awareness, where women were seen 86 percent more likely to be using the competency consistently than men. Women were also found to be 45 percent more likely than men to demonstrate empathy consistently.
Other notable competencies in which women excel more than men are coaching and mentoring, influence, inspirational leadership, conflict management, organizational awareness, adaptability, teamwork and achievement orientation.
“The data suggests a strong need for more women in the workforce to take on leadership roles,” said Daniel Goleman, Co-Director of the Consortium for Research on Emotional Intelligence in Organizations at Rutgers University."
“Our research shows that women are more equipped with emotional intelligence and therefore are more likely to lead effectively,” added Debabrat Mishra, Director at Korn Ferry Hay Group.
