Ways to enhance leadership opportunities for women

Bangalore: Female corporate leaders are becoming more common globally; whoever got into the lead business says that it was not easy for them to get there. Out of fortune 500 IT companies in India there are only 13 women CEO's who lead the organizations. Therefore it is the right time for the companies to think of launching a development program focused on boosting leadership opportunities for women. Even though women have the potential to become software engineers, scientists, or entrepreneurs, the proportion of women studying computer science has been steadily declining, from 37 percent in 1985 to 19 percent. Companies need to build a culture of inclusion and diversity from the time they are small through their growth stages. In fact, small businesses that make diversity part of their hiring practices are the most likely to succeed and grow. Telle Whitney, Chief Executive Officer of the Anita Borg Institute for Women & Technology and and Vivek Wadhwa, a Researcher at Duke University has suggested some practical strategies to get more women to leadership: Primarily, How many companies in India will Interview at least one woman for every open position? The focus should always be to hire the best person for the job regardless of gender. Experts say that however including qualified female candidates in the talent pool will make a difference. Secondly, a female candidate will recognize that business values diversity if interviewers include both the gender on the hiring team. Therefore Have at least one woman on the hiring team. A Stanford study of startup companies shows that having women in senior-level technical roles positively influences the hiring of more technical women. Thirdly, Focus on opportunities for growth, the Center for Work-Life Policy has shown that women at the mid-career stage are leaving large high-tech companies at twice the rate of their male colleagues. The report finds one of the reasons for this flight is a lack of opportunities for advancement and non-inclusive cultures. Fourthly, Emphasize flexibility, Anita Borg Institute's research on seven large high-tech companies has shown that technical women are more likely to look for flexible work environments. Most women in technology are in dual-career families and juggle the demands of work and family. Finally Understand numbers and unique needs. Majority of the studies has proved that innovation accelerates when there are diverse voices at the table - including diversity of gender, age, ethnic background, and expertise. It is true that gender balance will provide more creativity, efficiency, and employee satisfaction. Situation is improving in a global scenario and it is high time for the Indian organizations take initiative to increase the number of women workforce.
