Wage Gap A Major Issue In India

BENGALURU: The world may have overcome the issue of gender discrimination, but it’s still a major problem in India. Here, women are still discriminated in regards of their pay scabele and position. A survey by Monster India recently shows that the median wage earned by women is 27 percent less than the amount earned by men. The result of the survey was confirmed by 35, 959 respondents, industries and organizational hierarchies, reports Economic Times. As per the report, men earn an average of 259.80 per hour whereas a woman earns only up to 190.50 per hour.

As per the report, this wage gap differs from one sector to another. In IT sector women earn 34 percent less than that of the men, whereas in finance sector the difference is only 19 percent.

This difference in the earning may result due to preference of male employees in some menial works, career break for women that comes with child birth and many socio-cultural reasons.

Another concerning reason behind the pay gap may be lack of education. It is shameful to mention that in India some people still don’t believe in educating girls. It is very obvious that higher the education is higher will be the pay scale. Due to lack of education, women earn lesser salaries in comparison to men.

Among those women who are highly educated, most of them opt for the teaching profession, which is believed to pay the lowest hourly salary of 186.50 per hour among all the sectors.
