Uninor Aims to Find Jobs for Laid Off Employees in 4 Circles

Kolkata: Telecom player Uninor is exploring the option whether other firms, including competitors, can absorb its retrenched employees following its plans to scale down operations in four circles, a top official said.

“We have been in touch also with our competitors' (other telcos) human resource departments.....,” Sigve Brekke, Managing Director, Uninor said.

All competing telcos have expressed interest, Brekke added.

The company had earlier decided to scale down operations in four of its 13 circles.

Scaling down operations in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala and Odisha is likely to impact 2,000 jobs (that include 400 direct jobs).

In India, rehabilitation for affected employees to this extent is not common.

According to him, Uninor has already appointed an outsourcing agency to look into the matter.

A help desk will also be set up within Uninor to facilitate the process.

Uninor will also try to offer jobs to the affected employees in the circles it will operate.

Brekke, however, declined to confirm whether Uninor will not bid for these circles when airwaves come up for auction.
