Top 10 Sectors That Created the Highest Jobs in 2012

Bangalore: Amidst global financial crisis and sluggish economic growth that hampered the growth and employment opportunities in the country, there were few sunshine sectors that created huge job opportunities. Here is a list of such sunshine sectors in India that created new job opportunities in the year 2012, as reported by Anumeha Chaturvedi and Shreya Biswas on The Economic Times, based on Assocham survey. 

1. Information Technology:

The Indian Information Technology (IT) sector has grown at an exponential pace and has earned a brand identity in the last few years, which in turn has contributed substantially to increase the GDP (Gross Domestic Product), employment and exports in the country. This ever booming sector has also led to massive employment generation and continues to be the largest employment generator in the country. The sector provides direct employment to about 28, 00,000 and indirect employment to about 89, 00,000 individuals. In addition, this sector contributed to about 7.5 percent of India’s GDP in FY2012.

The top five hiring firms in this sector are TCS (Tata Consultancy Services), Infosys, Cognizant, Wipro and HCL Technologies respectively.

The Indian information technology sector hired around 2.1 lakhs employees in the year 2012.
