When not on the scene of an emergency, firefighters work at fire stations, where they sleep, eat, and remain on call during shifts that often last 24 hours. Many work over 40 hours per week.
Since they encounter dangerous situations, including traffic accidents, and overexposure to flames and smoke, they have one of the highest rates of injuries and illnesses of all occupations.
The median annual wage for firefighters is $45,250 and the projected job growth by 2022 is 7 percent.
Garbage collector:
You can call this a dirty job that nobody would like to do as a garbage collector, collect and remove reuse and recyclables from residential, commercial, industrial or other collection site for further processing and disposal.
Garbage collection is one of the most dangerous jobs as the job perils include broken glass; medical waste such as syringes; caustic chemicals; falling objects from overloaded containers; diseases that may accompany solid waste; asbestos; dog attacks and pests; inhaling dust, smoke, and fumes; inclement weather, traffic accidents, and odors so foul that they can make one physically sick.
Income levels and work environment make it a challenging career. The median annual wage for garbage collector is $22,970 and the projected job growth by 2022 is 10 percent.
