BANGALORE: Great news folks! More and more businesses are moving away from their ‘IITs only’ mindset and are giving equal importance to non IIT students. The good news doesn’t end there, with the students of second-rung engineering colleges facing a lot of distress over poor infrastructure facilities and little scope to showcase their skills, tech giants such as Microsoft and others are helping these students overcome that dilemma and exploit the platforms to the fullest, as reported by Malavika Murali of ET Bureau.
Among some of the latest developments, engineering students from NIE Mysore have developed Streamify, an online tool that helps users to host webinars, conferences and business calls. And to add on to that the software was launched through Mysore-based company called Reinventio at the Great Indian Developer Summit at IISc Bangalore and also showcased at the IBM campus.
"Passion is a big ingredient that I see in these students. We are venture capitalists in a way as we provide the students with technology and offer mentorship," said Karthik Padmanabhan, country head of ecosystem development at IBM.
Similarly, Microsoft’s Imagine Cup, which is supposed to be an annual global student technology competition, saw four engineers of Faridabad-based Manav Rachna College of Engineering seal the first place at the national finals held in Noida. Their product named RespirON primarily was targeted for asthma patients where in the app could make life easier for these patients by indicating the number of doses left in an inhaler with the help of an app rooted onto it.
TC Ramesh, the head aerospace engineering services company QuEST Global, said, "Sometimes the best from a tier 2 and tier 3 college can be better than an average student from an IIT. These students don't have many opportunities presented to them, and possess the hunger and talent, and we look to tap those."
