Bangalore: A recent decision to reduce the weightage of the industry project in the final results, forced engineering students in the sixth and seventh semesters of Gujarat University (GU) to stage a demonstration in its campus.
The project is mandatory for students of eighth semester and carries 500 marks. The university decided to reduce the marks to 300 and introduce two additional papers in the last semester of 100 marks each. The students said that the project was their only chance of getting exposure to the industry.
"All faculty heads had met before the term started, where this decision was taken. Students were found not to take project work seriously and ended up copying from each other. Also, there are some faculties where there is no project work. The purpose of the process was not being fulfilled. By introducing two additional papers, we have only reduced the scope of subjectivity in the course. We are considering the appeal of the students," said MN Patel, Dean of the Engineering Faculty at GU.
