Son of a Kanpur Mechanic Bags 1.4 Cr Scholarship From MIT
BENGALURU: Ayush Sharma from Kanpur is all set to go to Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Ayush is one among the three Indian students who have secured admission in of the world’s most prestigious institution—MIT of the Cambridge. Ayush stands out among the three students as he not only secured admission in the university but he is the only one to have bagged the 90 percent scholarship of 1.4crore.
World’s brightest students await this miraculous opportunity and Ayush is more than privileged to have earned it through his hardest efforts. 17- year old Ayush along with the others have cleared a series of Olympiads and managed uniform high grades in all the competitive as well as board examinations.
Ayush’s 90 percent scholarship which is a rare phenomenon includes his tuition fees, study material, stay and food expenses which costs up to 40lakh per annum. The scholarship covers the entire expenses for his four-year undergraduate course in MIT.
Ayush’s father, Rakesh Sharma, a mechanic with Public Works Department, could not be happier hearing the big news. According to his loved ones, Ayush had been a bright student from a very young age, was bound to reach great heights. He finished his secondary and higher secondary schooling with a perfect 10 CGPA in IIT Kanpur campus, where he came across ‘Avanti’ program undertaken by IIT graduates for lower income group students. With the help of ‘Avanti’ Ayush even got selected for Yale University’s Global Scholars Program in 2014.
For his applications for the universities abroad he received help from Red Pen, an organization that helps students with applications for universities abroad. Red Pen got his application in place on a pro-bono basis. His application was further taken under Need Blind Application Process, which allows 2, 000 applications to MIT, ignoring the financial status.
Ayush personally believes that it’s his ‘risk-taker’ attitude towards life that allowed him to fearlessly take up challenges. “I don’t play it safe,” says Ayush. This reality is still sinking in him and his family who are now overwhelmed with joy.
“Most of my family members are not even aware of MIT and can’t understand the gravity of this accomplishment. But they are all supportive of my dreams. I knew finance will be a big issue since my family could not raise funds to cover my entire education. But MIT just made the process smooth for me,” he added.
