BENGALURU: It is about time that the word urbanization is redefined. It is no more about people moving from towns to cities for employment, rather it is the urbanization of towns which generate employment from within. ToI reports that smaller towns are surging ahead as jobs hubs with a rapid entrepreneurial activity. National Sample Survey Organization, NSSO reports show that the smaller towns replace the cities while there is a lack of industrial activity. As the construction sector is booming in small towns more and more related jobs are found in smaller towns.

In towns with population below 50, 000 nearly 45 per cent of male workers and over 50 pct of female workers are found to be self-employed as against 36 and 38 pct in cities. Self employment includes small industrial or service sector units as well as shops.

Apart from such growth in employment in small towns, there is another evolution to be noted as well. Women in smaller towns are rapidly learning professional skills that could help them work for a services sector organization or in a startup. For women, the changes were more drastic with industrial jobs declining from nearly 34% in big cities to 29 % but zooming up from 29 to 38 % in small towns.

The smaller the town the better tied up the rural economy. This is how women in smaller towns are now easily able to find employment. The decline of female employment opportunities in these years has led to an increase in urban women working in agricultural activities with their proportion rising from about 18% to 25% in Class III towns. Male participation in agriculture in urban areas has remained stagnant or declined.
