Skill India Launched: Can The Campaign Bridge The Skill Gap?
BANGALORE: Although the government aims to launch the World Youth Skills Day it doesn’t seem to live up to the cause, as just about 2 pct in growth for employable skills had taken place in the engineering sector last year, reports TOI.
According to the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC), the situation proved to be worse in the polytechnics as a rate below one-third of the students could not meet the benchmark levels.
As per 2013 report, around 61pct of Indian employers surveyed, had pointed out that the inadequate skills of the candidates had hindered their chances of filling the vacancies in their respective companies.
Only 14 pct of Indian workforce has good hand over inter-personal skills and 10 pct has good communication skills.
As the country embarks to set the vision ‘Make in India’ the question raises as to whether India has achieved the required technical curricula and skilled manpower.
An analysis taken up had showed that the engineering graduates in U.S spend 40pct of their time on the shop floor compared to 9 pct of the time Indians spend.
The difference between the two being the American engineers benefit from practical knowledge through grades/credits they score from research in labs or projects, whereas in India maximum knowledge is obtained through theoretical knowledge.
Ajay Kela, President and CEO of Wadhwani Foundation, a nonprofit organization that aims at bridging the skill gap in India said "In India, and globally, there is an enormous gap between the skills needed by the industry and what academia is producing, resulting in a deep fracture in the talent supply chain."
"By 2020, almost 60pct of India's population of 1.3 billion will be in the working age group of 15-59 years. If adequately skilled this demographic dividend could make India a global HR powerhouse."
Moreover, other sector also seem to have suffered the same fate this includes, media, health, education, agriculture, IT, retails and handlooms among many others. Till now achievements haven’t managed to make a successful impact, failing to meet the target. Up till 20013, the NSDC and several other ministries managed to secure a 16.5 pct in targeting skills in which around 8.5 million people that require training only 1.4 million have been successfully trained.
