The Compatibility Test
At startups, teams are built form the ground up, and it’s very important to get it right from the beginning. So companies often make sure that everyone is on board, even employees who are junior to the person being hired.
For example, all hires at the Ibibo group, the parent company of Goibibo and RedBus, are overseen by the CEO Ashish Kashyap himself. There are three rounds of interviews for mid-level employees, and five for senior candidates. The interview dockets are aggregated and sent to the CEO Kashyap for his final decision.
The Airport Test
So how do you know if a skilled applicant is someone everybody will like to work with? One of the most popular tests or interview techniques is the airport test.
The premise is simple; just hire people you don’t mind being stranded at an airport. Thus the interviewer talks with the applicants for over two hours, encouraging them to talk about their passions and hobbies and set the pace of the conversation.
The airport test can be combined with other challenges to pick the best candidate.
The Adaptability Test
Startups are often places where something is being done for the first time, or something that has been done a million times is being transformed using technology. This requires out-of-the-box thinking and adaptability in unfamiliar situations.
Many companies throw curve balls to test applicants like telling the candidates it is office exercise time and inviting them to join in, or asking them to play a guitar if they say they’ve never held one before in their life.
