Rural Women Woes: Lose 91 Lakh Jobs in Two Years
As per Neetha N of the Centre for Women's Development Studies, rapidly declining women's employment in rural areas is an enduring trend in India that has persisted in spite of the strong economic growth in the country. She added that, three decades ago in the year 1983, approximately 34 percent of women in rural areas were employed. And these numbers have steadily reduced and currently stand at a little below 25 percent.
As per Neetha, though many argue that the fall in women’s work is directly proportional to the fact that presently more and more women are either studying or opting to stay at home because the men of the family are earning enough, this is not supported by the figures. She strengthened her argument by stating that, though in urban areas more girls enroll into schools and colleges, and there is a superior household income when compared to rural areas, women's employment is still on the rise in urban areas and is declining in rural areas.
As per V K Ramachandran, professor of economic analysis at the Indian Statistical Institute, Bangalore, the massive dip in public investment in farming, coupled with rapid mechanization of various processes, are the major reasons behind the current job crisis in rural parts of the country. He also added that, the severe delays and hindrance in expansion of irrigation and supply of electricity in rural India are also causing the jobs to dry up in these areas.
