Bangalore: There are always many debates on whether we should attend private colleges or the public one. In today's economic situation public universities have seen a surge in applicants because of the presumed lower cost of a state-funded school. But is the quality of the education in private college better? According to Peyton Randolph Helm, President of Muhlenberg College, what private liberal arts colleges provide is very high quality and high sticker price, the sticker price is not necessarily the cost and it's not necessarily the value, because of financial aid. He also added that the better, the more prestigious the institution, the more you have small classes and you have direct interaction with your professors. Many private institutions have large classes, but according to him a classics course should be only with just 10 students. Whereas public universities, especially in tight financial times, often have fewer resources than private colleges, so they may need to rely more on loans and self-help as they attempt to meet a student's need. Many public colleges are less able to respond to financial crisis. When there is a crisis for funds, state-supported universities frequently become targets for cost cutting. For state universities, difficult economic times can lead to a reduced ability to offer merit scholarships, a reduction in the size of the faculty, larger classes, layoffs and the cutting of programs. So we can say that the cost of paying the additional money at a private college is a worthwhile investment for the students. In private schools, one of the positive points is, it can give individual attention. But in a public school you will generally find much larger class sizes. But the differences between attending a private university rather than a public university, is just the individual differences between students themselves. And a college is only as good as what a student makes of it. So, which one you will opt for, private or public? Both of them has their own advantages and disadvantages. Which works best for you?
