Mumbai: Anirudh Patni, the son of Patni Computer Systems' Founder Narendra Patni, who is in his thirties, has resigned from the company because of differences with its professional management headed by CEO Jeya Kumar, who came on board earlier this year.
"When Jeya Kumar was brought in, he was made certain promises and given some powers to run the company. The Patni board is also now asserting itself and the company is being run professionally," the source told the Economic Times under the conditions of anonymity. On Tuesday, Kumar confirmed Anirudh's resignation but declined to comment on the reasons for his exit. "We do not comment on the reasons for any employee departures in the company. Anirudh has made many contributions over the years and we wish him all the best in his endeavours," Kumar said. He added that the resignation would not impact the growth prospects of Patni, as Anirudh was in a functional role.
According to the anonymous source quoted earlier, Anirudh had submitted his resignation on December 15, which was accepted by the management the same day. He had joined the company almost a decade ago, and was part of the executive leadership team as Senior Vice President for Strategy and Corporate Development, his last designation before he quit. Both sources spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter.
The episode is a rarity in the annals of Indian corporate governance, where professional managers tend to come off second best if they clash with promoters. The software industry has been something of an exception with the founders of Infosys, India's second software company by turnover, making it clear that their children will not succeed them.
