Bhubaneshwar: The umbrella association of the private engineering colleges comprising the MCA institutions has warned to file a contempt petition against the state government, after the government stated that the admissions beyond Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) would not be valid and recognized.
The Orissa Private Engineering Colleges Association (OPECA) had come up with a notice to hold the Common Entrance Test (CET) to fill up the vacant positions, citing an order from the Orissa High Court.
Over 9,000 seats in engineering, 2,000 in MCA, 1,300 in MBA and 300 in B Pharmacy streams lie vacant even after two rounds of JEE followed by counseling conducted by the JEE Committee constituted by Policy Planning Body of the Government.
This year, the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) approved 30 new colleges that will add 8,000 seats to the total pool. The low demands in recession and demand-supply disequilibrium led to a dismal admission rate leaving huge vacancies.
The OPECA said that the Orissa High Court has allowed filling up of the vacant seats by holding CET. "The order was informed to PPB in its last meeting on September 24 and nobody raised any objection to it. Without receiving the High Court order, terming the examination illegal and invalid is injustice," said the association. The OPECA also added that the Government steps are undermining the efforts of the private entrepreneurs and are discouraging them.
The organization demanded that colleges should be allowed to fill up their vacant seats individually as per an affidavit submitted by the government last year before the Supreme Court. It also added that the state government should bear the financial burden in case the vacancies are not filled up.
