These facilities are a new trend to the Indian educational system. But this type of educational system has already been established in many primary, secondary and higher educational systems in United States and other European countries.
In the U.S., Cornell University and Brown University offered the curriculum which was designed in the year 1969, which allowed students to take courses for any requirements except those in their chosen concentrations. These types of approaches helped the students to choose their interested courses. This type of curriculum surely provided students to graduate without taking college level science or maths course or to take only science or maths courses.
When we come to European nations, the National Curriculum was introduced into England, Wales and Northern Ireland as a nationwide curriculum for primary and secondary state schools following the Education Reform Act 1988. The purpose of this curriculum was to standardize the content taught across schools in order to enable assessment.
The main aims of this National Curriculum were to allow pupil to learn well and to achieve and promote pupil's spiritual, moral, social and cultural development and prepare them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of life.
