Mumbai IITian wins Chevrolet Design Contest

Bangalore:'Design the next Chevrolet Contest' organized by General Motors India, had young and aspiring engineers and design students from across the country participating. John Paul Xavier from Industrial Design Centre at IIT Mumbai won the contest and was facilitated recently with a brand new Chevrolet Beat. Sachin Panchal from DSK International School of Design, Pune, bagged the first runners-up position.
This contest was a platform for young students who aspire to make it big in the field of automotive designing which eventually will benefit the automotive industry in the long term. Alongside styling and designing of a car is considered as the most integral part of the contest says Karl Slym, President and Managing Director, GM India.
The objective of this contest was to design a car and a panel of judges shortlisted the design according to aesthetics, visual appeal, ergonomics, development potential and overall presentation. Other aspect of the contest that was kept in mind was driving conditions, the environment and safety.
The jury members consisted of Karl Slym, President & Managing Director, GM India, Hormazd Sorabjee, Editor-in-Chief, Autocar, Anil Saini, Director, GM India Design, Global Network Teams & Sumit Sawhney, Vice-President, Sales, Marketing & After-Sales, GM India. The contest started in September 2010, with more than 1,200 entries among which only 40 were shortlisted. Students from various engineering colleges and institutions from across the country participated.
Chevrolet will complete 100 years of its successful operation in the next few months. They have a fully functional design and technical set up in Bangalore with about 2,000 engineers with various capacities. Further, they even plan to launch new products and services for the global audience.
