Chandigarh: The Haryana government wants the retirement age of medical education faculty raised from 65 years to 70 in view of a shortage of teachers in the field, the state's health minister said Wednesday. Speaking at a conference of health ministers in Hyderabad, Haryana's Health and Education Minister Geeta Bhukkal said that keeping in mind the shortage of medical education faculty, the proposal to raise their retirement age from 65 to 70 years needed consideration. However, she favoured a strict screening process to ensure that extension beyond 60 years is given only to those who evince keen interest in research and advancement in their respective fields and enjoy a sound physical and mental health, an official spokesperson said here quoting the minister. Bhukkal also suggested common entrance tests for MBBS and BDS admissions and increase in MBBS seats in select medical colleges.
