Majority Of Indian Graduates Are Unemployable: Study

BANGALORE: The terrible irony of our Indian education system is that every year there are over 3 million students who graduate but not even half of them are employable. This is a shocker for a democracy that has more youths than old people. The youths are the future of the country was a slogan of the past it looks like. Numerous surveys conducted over the years have shown this saddening problem in India only to be increasing.

The last reports show that India is expected to have over 8.3 lakh new jobs in the growing economy but the problem lies in who is fit enough to occupy these positions. A survey conducted by Aspiring Minds show that out of the total number of graduates only 2.59 percent of them was found employable in functional roles, while 15.88 percent was suitable for employment in sales related roles and 21.37 percent for roles in the business process outsourcing sector.

The reasons that have risen for this lack of unemployability according to Aspiring Minds survey is based on two major things, one is the lack of English and second is the lack of computer skills. 47 percent of graduates are unemployable for any job, the findings show. The students who fall under the 47 percent are those who have poor English and absolutely no idea of any basic computer skills.

"Computer Programming skill is the key foundational skill required by the IT industry and also covered by academic curriculum. Yet, we find only 14.97 percent of IT specialization students can write a simple program, while 70 percent of them show theoretical understanding. Clearly, the problem is rote learning. This needs to be fixed," said Varun Aggarwal, the founder of Aspiring Minds.

Apparently most graduates believe that theoretical knowledge will fetch them a job with a degree in hand but it is not so. The times when a degree fetched you jobs is long gone now companies rely on skills that put them above the rest of the crowd and skills that are not particularly related to theory.

The survey also found that the quality of education system has reduced and there are no quality teachers to guide students. Education system is becoming a field to make profits rather raise students who will change the world. Unlike before education institutions are profit minting industry that care less for student growth and hide the ignorance of personalization through sophisticated infrastructure that needless to say don’t help much because students no longer are the types to stay within campus.

It has come to a point where students will have to make up their minds if they want to be employed. They will have to stop being lazy and improve their skills in every area of life if they want to see a future that will make them successful. It has to be self motivation and no longer depend on an external force.
