Major Layoffs of the Year 2011

RIM, [Research in Motion]:

As the popularity has gone down of the Blackberry line of smartphones, RIM announced on July 25th this year that it will begin to layoff around 2,000 employees or 10.5 percent of its workforce in that week. When the company had announced the job cut, the number of job loss was higher than what the experts had expected.

The company’s share price has gone down by about half over the last year because of the growing popularity of Apple iPhones and phones that are running Google’s Android operating system in RIM’s crucial North American market, reports the New York Times.
